Sean Longstaff has admitted that he has been flattered to be linked with a transfer to Manchester United this summer but insists he is focused on getting ready for the new campaign.

The Newcastle United midfielder has been strongly linked with a switch to Old Trafford throughout the summer transfer window but there is yet to be any official talk of a move.

It remains to be seen whether Manchester United will be able to get a deal to sign the 21-year-old done before the summer transfer window closes on Thursday next week.

However, the midfielder has moved to insist that he has not been distracted by talk of a potential move to Old Trafford and he says he is just focused on being ready for the forthcoming campaign.

Speaking in an interview quoted by the Daily Mirror, Longstaff said: “Obviously, I’m still young and getting used to all that side of it [the transfer talk]. There’s nothing you can do.

“To have your name mentioned with those top clubs is obviously great, but, for me, it’s about working as hard as I can for Newcastle and getting back.

“I’m trying to focus on football. The stuff off the pitch isn’t what you play for, you can get too caught up in it.”

If Longstaff ends up staying at Newcastle United, he will be hoping to be ready for the Magpies’ season opener against Arsenal on Sunday 11 August at St James’ Park.

Manchester United have made two signings so far this summer after having tied up deals for Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James.

The Red Devils will be aiming to try and break back into the top four this season after they ended up sixth and without a trophy last term.
