Sadio Mane reacts to Liverpool FC’s 2-1 win at Southampton
Liverpool FC star Sadio Mane gives his verdict on their 2-1 victory over Southampton on Saturday evening
Sadio Mane admitted Liverpool FC took “a little time” to get going in Saturday afternoon’s 2-1 win at Southampton.
The Senegal international scored twice in the Uefa Super Cup on Wednesday night as Liverpool FC beat Chelsea FC on penalties following a 2-2 draw after 120 minutes.
Mane was named in the starting XI for the trip to Southampton despite having a limited pre-season campaign following his participation in the World Cup.
Liverpool FC struggled to get going in a sluggish first-half performance but Mane edged the visitors into a slender lead with a brilliant strike.
The Senegal forward managed to beat Angus Gunn with a shot that found the top corner.
Liverpool FC doubled their lead in the second half thanks to Roberto Firmino’s clinical finish to leave the Reds on the cusp of 11 successive victories.
Summer signing Adrian made an error in the 83rd minute to allow Danny Ings to halve the deficit against his former club and ensure a nervous end to the Premier League clash.
Speaking to BBC Sport about Liverpool FC’s 2-1 win at St Mary’s, Mane said:
“What a game, it was not an easy game but you have to expect a tough game like this at this stage of the season.
“After playing 120 minutes on Wednesday it was not easy and we know it would be difficult. It was not easy and it took us a little bit of time to get going.
“But we got the three points and I think we deserved it. Once we scored the first goal it was easier for us.”
Mane has now scored three goals in his last two appearances in all competitions.
The Reds will take on bitter rivals Arsenal in their next Premier League game at Anfield on Sunday 24 August.
