David Luiz says defenders must take responsibility for their performances after Arsenal's 2-2 draw with Spurs

David Luiz has admitted that Arsenal’s defenders must take responsibility for their performances after their 2-2 draw with Tottenham on Sunday.

Defensive mistakes cost Arsenal the first two goals in the north London derby at The Emirates on Sunday as the Gunners had to come from behind to seal a point.

Christian Eriksen and Harry Kane put the visitors 2-0 up, before goals from Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang earned a point for the north London side.

David Luiz himself was criticised for his performance in Arsenal’s 3-1 loss to Liverpool FC last month.

However, the 32-year-old defender insists that he is used to the criticism and says that players must take responsibility for their displays.

Speaking in an interview with Sky Sports, David Luiz said: “I think [the criticism] is normal, in my all my career it has been like that, especially when you are a defender,” he told Sky Sports News.

“Strikers never lose games unless if they miss a penalty in the last minute, this is football.

“The defenders have to take responsibility and take [criticism] in a good way, in a humble way. We need to understand when we make a mistake and say that.

“I’m going to try to do my best always. My game until the penalty at Liverpool was very good, especially for our first big game.

“Today, even with pain I played the whole game and tried to show spirit until the very end.

“I am trying to improve with the team every single day. You have to be mature to understand this kind of moment.”

Arsenal will return to Premier League action after the international break when they take on Watford away from home on 15 September.

The north London side find themselves in fifth place in the Premier League table and with seven points from their opening four games in the top flight this term.

David Luiz has started Arsenal’s last three games after having arrived at The Emirates from Chelsea FC back in August.
