Cristiano Ronaldo has revealed that he was just “one step” away from signing for Arsenal before he ended up joining Manchester United – and says that north London side is a “fantastic” club.

The Portugal international is widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time and he has now explained that he came incredibly close to signing for the Gunners before his eventual move to Old Trafford from Sporting Lisbon in 2003.

Arsenal were said to have made an approach for his services but the attacker ended up signing for Manchester United in the summer of 2003 and the rest is history.

Now, the former Real Madrid star has revealed that he did indeed come close to signing for the Gunners before his switch to Old Trafford.

Asked how close he was to signing for Arsenal, Ronaldo said in an interview with ITV: “Very close. One step. Seriously.

“It didn’t happen, but Arsenal, I appreciate what they did for me, especially Arsene Wenger, but football you never know where you are going to play, life is like that.

“But I appreciate Arsenal because it is a fantastic club.”

Arsenal are currently preparing for their Europa League clash Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday night away from home.

The Gunners will then switch their attentions towards their Premier League clash against Aston Villa at The Emirates on Sunday afternoon.

Arsenal are aiming to break back into the top four after having finished fifth and without a trophy last term.
