Liverpool FC manager Jurgen Klopp spoke to Georginio Wijnaldum before signing Virgil van Dijk, according to a report
Jurgen Klopp spoke to Georginio Wijnaldum about Virgil van Dijk before Liverpool FC completed their club-record swoop for the centre-half, according to the Dutch midfielder.
Van Dijk has established himself as the most important player in the Liverpool FC team over the past 18 months or so since his move to the six-time European champions.
Liverpool FC finally signed Van Dijk in a £75m deal from Premier League rivals Southampton following months of speculation surrounding his future at the Anfield outfit.
Van Dijk helped Liverpool FC to finish in second place with the best defensive record in the Premier League last season along with a record points tally of 97.
Liverpool FC won the Champions League thanks to a 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur in the final after the Reds beat Bayern Munich, FC Porto and FC Barcelona in the knockout stage.
Wijnaldum has revealed that Klopp spoke to the Liverpool FC midfielder about Van Dijk before the Merseyside outfit completed their swoop for the imposing centre-half.
“Before I even joined Liverpool I had a meeting with Jurgen and during our talks he asked me about Virgil van Dijk,” Wijnaldum is quoted as saying by Metro.
“I had always rated Virgil very highly and my exact words to Jurgen were, ‘He is going to make the defence a lot better’.
“So I was not surprised when Virgil won the UEFA Best Player award ahead of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. I actually expected him to win it.
“Virgil has had a blinder of a season and has been so successful. Nothing about him surprises me any more.”
Van Dijk was named the PFA Player of the Year last season for his impact on Liverpool FC following his record move.
The Reds star is no longer the world’s most expensive defender after Harry Maguire completed an £80m move to Manchester United this summer.
