Jurgen Klopp sends clear Liverpool FC message to Xherdan Shaqiri
Jurgen Klopp opens up about Xherdan Shaqiri's situation at Liverpool FC this season
Jurgen Klopp has insisted that Liverpool FC will “need” Xherdan Shaqiri this season despite his lack of playing time so far this term.
The Switzerland international has barely featured for the Reds so far this term and he had not played any role in Liverpool FC’s first three Premier League games of the season heading into the clash at Burnley.
Shaqiri did come on as substitute during the Community Shield clash with Manchester City at Wembley at the start of August, but the attacker will clearly be hoping to try and force his way into the first team in the coming weeks and months.
The 27-year-old will be hoping to get some minutes under his belt this season as he bids to try and help Klopp’s side challenge for the Premier League title.
And Klopp has insisted that it will not be long before Shaqiri makes some more regular appearances.
Speaking at a news conference before Saturday’s trip to Burnley, Klopp said: “Shaq is training well, that’s the situation.
“It’s the first four weeks of the season, that’s how it is. That’s probably the hardest period for players who are not [playing].
“In training, Shaq doesn’t have to improve in any way if he can keep the level he is doing at the moment.
“Of course he can improve like how everybody can improve, but it’s not about that – he doesn’t have to show anything special.
“We will need him, he knows that 100 per cent.”
He continued: “Is he the happiest player in the squad? I don’t think so. Can I see that on the training pitch? No.
“He is in a good mood, training hard, doing what he has to do and is ready for the moment when he has to help the team on the pitch.”
Liverpool FC will return to Premier League action after the international break when they host Newcastle United at Anfield on Saturday 14 September.
The Reds are aiming to go one step further than they did last season and win the Premier League title this term.
