The England striker started in a central role for Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Southampton at St Mary’s last weekend.
Rashford was unable to find the net despite the visitors creating a host of chances against the Saints after Daniel James’ opening goal.
The 21-year-old has made a slow start to the current campaign after Rashford netted twice in a 4-0 victory over Chelsea FC in their season opener last month.
Rashford missed a penalty in Manchester United’s 2-1 loss to Crystal Palace in their last Premier League fixture at Old Trafford.
Former Manchester United midfielder Scholes isn’t sure whether Rashford is suited to a centre-forward role in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team.
“I think that’s the big question – what actually is he? And it’s the same with Greenwood, Martial, he’s similar,” Scholes told Premier League Productions, as quoted by Metro.
“On that performance [against Southampton] he just didn’t look like a centre-forward.
“I don’t think you can judge it on one performance, he hasn’t played there a lot.
“He looks like the scorer of great goals rather than a great goalscorer to me.”
Manchester United have collected five points from their opening four games in the Premier League.
The Red Devils haven’t won a game since their rout of Chelsea FC at the start of the season.
Solskjaer signed Swansea City winger James, Crystal Palace defender Aaron-Wan-Bissaka and Leicester City centre-half Harry Maguire in the summer transfer window.
Manchester United will welcome Maguire’s former club Leicester to Old Trafford in their next Premier League fixture on Saturday 14 September.
