Chris Smalling is ready to complete a permanent transfer away from Manchester United after having joined AS Roma on a season-long loan deal, according to reports in the British media.

The Daily Mirror is reporting that Smalling is “relishing” his fresh start in Italy after having fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The same report carries quotes from Smalling himself as saying that he would be open to making his move permanent next summer if both clubs are happy.

Smalling is quoted as saying in the article: “To be able to have the chance at a big club, and then if it prolongs and the club is happy, then I can definitely see a longer term future in Italy.

“I think this is an opportunity that came to me that I was very interested in and I’m very eager to come.

“It happened very quickly and I think if I focus on the next game, getting up to speed with training, in terms of the manager’s methods and then hopefully have a very good season, then see what happens.”

Smalling was allowed to leave Old Trafford after Solskjaer bolstered his central defensive options in the summer transfer window with the signing of Harry Maguire from Leicester City.

The defender is one of a number of Manchester United players to have headed to Serie A this summer, with Romelu Lukaku having joined Inter Milan along with Alexis Sanchez in a loan deal, while Matteo Darmian headed to Parma.

Manchester United will return to Premier League action after the international break when the Red Devils host Leicester City in front of their home fans on Saturday 14 September.

The Red Devils finished in sixth place last season and without a trophy.
