The Red Devils finally secured their first win in the Premier League since their opening weekend victory over Chelsea FC at Old Trafford back in August.
Marcus Rashford scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot in the eighth minute at Old Trafford as the Red Devils claimed all three points.
De Gea was in fine form throughout the game and the Spaniard made a number of key saves to deny the likes of James Maddison and Ben Chilwell.
And BBC Sport pundit Crooks believes that De Gea deserves plenty of credit for a solid performance for the Red Devils at the weekend.
Writing in his column for BBC Sport, Crooks said: “The save from Leicester’s James Maddison with only a few moments gone was superb and the tip over the bar from a Ben Chilwell strike that was dipping viciously under the bar dealt with an effort that had real menace.
“De Gea took some ferocious stick towards the end of last season from people who should have known better.
“The suggestion that the Spain international keeper should have been left out of the Manchester United team line-up was as hysterical as it gets.
“Reports that De Gea is close to signing a new contract puts some of those comments in to their proper perspective and it will be the best bit of business United have done for some considerable time.”
Manchester United will now switch their attentions towards their Europa League clash against Astana on Thursday night.
The Red Devils are currently in fourth place in the Premier League table as they seek Champions League qualification in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first full season in charge of the Red Devils.
