Michael Owen is backing Manchester City to beat Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

The defending Premier League champions suffered a 3-2 defeat by promoted side Norwich City at Carrow Road on Saturday.

Pep Guardiola’s side showed a weakness at the back as Norwich stormed into a 2-0 first-half lead before the Canaries clung on after the break.

Manchester City have won the Premier League title in the last two seasons but the Champions League crown has so far eluded the Citizens.

Guardiola’s side have fallen at the quarter-final stage in the last two seasons following defeats by Liverpool FC and Spurs.

Former Manchester United striker Owen is backing Manchester City to get off to a winning start in their group-stage campaign on Wednesday night.

“City play Shakhtar for the third successive year in the group stages, but they do so on the back of a surprise 3-2 loss at Norwich in the Premier League on Saturday,” Owen told BetVictor.

“City scored nine times without reply in the two ties between the teams last term and I expect to see another comfortable evening for Pep Guardiola’s side despite that chastening defeat at Carrow Road.

“One thing is for sure, City must improve defensively if they are to retain their Premier League title or make a realistic challenge for a first Champions League.”

Manchester City have won three of their previous four meetings with Shakhtar Donetsk in European competitions, including a 6-0 home win and a 3-0 away win in the group stage last term.

This is Manchester City’s ninth Champions League campaign.

The Citizens have been involved in the group stage every season since 2011-12 and have reached the round of 16 or better in the last six campaigns.

Guardiola’s side are aiming to reach the knockout stages of the Champions League for the seventh season in a row.
