Steve McManaman reacts to Georginio Wijnaldum’s goal in Liverpool FC’s win at Sheff United
Liverpool FC legend Steve McManaman gives his verdict on Georginio Wijnaldum's winner at Sheffield United
Steve McManaman says Liverpool FC got a lot of luck at Sheffield United after Georginio Wijnaldum’s winner in the second half at Brammall Lane.
The Reds were looking to protect their 100 per cent record following six successive Premier League victories to secure top spot in the table.
Liverpool FC had two chances to break the deadlock in the first half but Sadio Mane fired over the crossbar before the Senegal international hit the woodwork.
Sheffield United continued to hold their own after half-time before Wijnaldum ended the home side’s resistance with a 70th-minute goal.
The Netherland international’s goal had a touch of fortune after his shot crept between the legs of Dean Henderson and rolled across the line.
Former Liverpool FC midfielder McManaman felt Jurgen Klopp’s men were fortunate to pick up three points given their subdued performance.
“It’s a big mistake from the goalkeeper,” McManaman told BT Sport.
“It fell to Wijnaldum, who hit it well. The goalkeeper can’t get it out. He has a good look at it but he fluffs his lines. It’s a simple one for him. Liverpool have had a bit of luck today. ”
Liverpool FC are sitting at the top of the Premier League table following victories over Norwich City, Southampton, Burnley, Arsenal, Chelsea FC, Newcastle United and Sheffield United.
The Reds will return to Champions League action with a home clash against Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg at Anfield on Wednesday night.
Liverpool FC finished in second place in the Premier League table last term and a point adrift of champions Manchester City.
