The home side were able to overcome a red card for Serge Aurier and a mistake by Hugo Lloris to claim all three points in front of their home fans and bounce back to winning ways.
Aurier was sent off for a second yellow card in the first half after Spurs had taken the lead through Tanguy Ndombele’s opener.
Lloris then allowed Danny Ings to net an equaliser for the visitors six minutes before half-time.
But Harry Kane put Tottenham back in front in the 43rd minute with a close-range finish.
Spurs managed to hold on for the three points despite being down to 10 men for most of the game.
And former Arsenal star Nicholas described the result as a huge one for Mauricio Pochettino’s men.
Speaking to Sky Sports News, Nicholas said: “It’s a massive win for Tottenham given they were down to ten men for most of it.”
The result lifts Tottenham up into fourth place in the Premier League table and a point behind third-placed West Ham United.
Spurs will return to Champions League action on Tuesday night with a home clash against Bayern Munich in north London.
