The Ivory Coast international became the north London side’s club-record signing in August as Unai Emery opted to bring in the talented attacker from French side Lille.
The 24-year-old, however, has made something of a slow start to the new season in an Arsenal shirt, and he has only managed to score one goal and make two assists in eight Premier League games so far this term.
Pepe was criticised for a below-par performance in the 1-1 draw with Manchester United at Old Trafford earlier this month.
However, Wenger feels that the attacker simply needs some time to find his feet in England after having signed for the Gunners in the summer transfer window.
Speaking in an interview quoted by the Daily Express, Wenger said of Pepe: “I like the player and I thought it was a good decision [to sign him].
“He’s not yet completely adapted and you have to give him some time.
“He looks a little bit to be playing not with the freedom he did in France at the moment.
“I see some characteristics of his game, especially off the ball, that don’t happen at the moment.
“On the other hand, I must say we have good young players who can play on the flanks, [and] that he will have a fight to keep his position.”
Arsenal will return to Premier League action after the international break when they take on Sheffield United away from home.
The north London side are up to third place in the Premier League table after their 1-0 win over Bournemouth at The Emirates at the weekend.
