Patrice Evra has urged Nicolas Pepe to hit the gym hard to help him adapt to the rigours of the Premier League with Arsenal.

The Ivory Coast international has made an underwhelming start to his Arsenal career after having signed for the Gunners from Lille in the summer transfer window.

Pepe has only managed to score one goal and make two assists in nine Premier League games for the Gunners so far this season – and he drew another blank in the 1-0 loss to Sheffield United on Monday night.

The 24-year-old looks as though he will need some time to get used to the testing nature of the Premier League.

Former Manchester United defender Evra says he fully believes in the winger but has suggested that he may need to bulk up a little bit to adapt to life in the English top flight.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Evra said: “I think the big price tag doesn’t help, it puts pressure [on].

“I think some fans don’t understand it doesn’t mean if we bought you for £70m or £100m you will score like 30 goals.

“[Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang [did but] he has been playing for many years, he’s been scoring many goals for many years. So you have to give time to Pepe, I believe in this player.

“I think he just needs to realise the Premier League is completely different to the French league.

“He should be stronger so maybe he should like go in the gym, like build a massive body and you will see.”

Pepe will be hoping to start for Arsenal when the Gunners return to Premier League action on Sunday afternoon with a home clash against Crystal Palace.

The north London side currently find themselves in fifth place in the Premier League table and two points behind fourth-placed Chelsea FC.
