Frank Lampard: What I really think about Tammy Abraham at Chelsea FC
Chelsea FC manager Frank Lampard lavishes praise on Tammy Abraham for his current form
Frank Lampard has heaped praise on Tammy Abraham for repaying his trust in the Chelsea FC striker.
Abraham broke the deadlock in the 17th minute of Chelsea FC’s 4-1 win over Southampton at St Mary’s on Sunday.
The England Under-21 international’s goal was his second in successive games after the tall striker opened his Champions League account in a 2-1 victory at Ligue 1 side Lille last weekend.
Abraham’s goal at Southampton was his eighth in the Premier League in eight games to sit at the top of the goal-scoring charts alongside Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero.
The 22-year-old has managed to keep World Cup winner Olivier Giroud and Belgian striker Michy Batshuayi on the sidelines since Lampard’s appointment in the summer.
The Blues manager delivered a glowing verdict on Abraham’s current form for the west London side after his great start to the Premier League season at Chelsea FC.
“You talk about when people are in good form, things happen for them or they generally have moments,” Lampard said after the win on Sunday.
“For me, that comes from how Tammy has handled himself all season from the early moments of pre-season and the start of the season when people were questioning him in different ways.
“It’s the work ethic behind the scenes that gets him in such good nick. He’s not just an incredible handful for defenders – he’s running them, he’s holding the ball up, he’s controlling it, he’s got good feet – he’s also getting his goals, which is brilliant for him.
“I trusted in Tammy at the start of the season. I felt it was his time to come back to Chelsea.
“I know people will talk about the circumstances [of the transfer ban], but he also has Olivier Giroud, who’s a World Cup winner, and also [Michy] Batshuayi who’s a top-class Premier League striker in my opinion as well.
“He’s made the position his own in the short-term now. He has to keep that going because competition is key and over the course of the season we’ll need everybody.
“But he has deserved the great week he has had. He has deserved the great start to the season he has had and I will keep on him, because I want more.”
Abraham failed to score in his first three appearances of the season before he netted twice in a 3-2 win over Norwich City.
The English striker scored two goals in a 2-2 draw with Sheffield United before he netted a hat-trick in a 5-2 win at Wolves.
Chelsea FC will return to Premier League action with a home clash against Newcastle United on Saturday 19 October.
