Glenn Hoddle heaped praise on Chelsea FC for their impressive defensive performance after they claimed a 1-0 victory over Ajax in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

The Blues have been in top form in recent weeks and their victory in Amsterdam was their fifth in a row in all competitions under new boss Frank Lampard.

After a goalless first half in the Dutch capital, substitute Michy Batshuayi scored the winner for the visitors when he turned home Christian Pulisic’s low cross in the 86th minute, with his shot going in off the underside of the crossbar.

Chelsea FC have been enjoying a solid run of form under their new manager as they get used to life under Lampard.

And former England manager Hoddle was particularly impressed by how Chelsea FC showed attacking intent until the final whistle in Amsterdam on Wednesday night.

Speaking to BT Sport after the game, Hoddle said: “It was the 86th minute and you’ve got Marcos Alonso, the left-back, inside the six yard box.

“So not only were Chelsea brilliant defensively as a team, they were really looking to score right up until the last minutes – and they got their just rewards.”

Next up for Chelsea FC is their Premier League clash against Burnley away from home on Saturday evening.

The Blues will then turn their attentions to the small matter of their League Cup fourth-round tie against Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday 30 October.

The west London side are currently in fourth place in the Premier League table as they seek Champions League qualification under Lampard this term.

Lampard was brought in as Maurizio Sarri’s successor at Stamford Bridge back in July.
