Steve Nicol is backing Frank Lampard to guide Chelsea FC to a top-four finish in the Premier League this season.

The Blues have been finding their feet under their new boss in recent weeks after Lampard was brought in as Maurizio Sarri’s successor in the summer.

Chelsea FC made it back to back wins in the Premier League last weekend when they claimed an impressive 4-1 victory at Southampton on Sunday afternoon.

The west London side currently find themselves in fifth place in the Premier League table and just a point behind third-placed Arsenal as they look to try and maintain their spot in the top four this season.

Chelsea FC finished third last season and Lampard will be keen for the Blues to maintain their place in the Champions League qualification spots.

And Liverpool FC legend Nicol is tipping the Blues to finish in the top four because of their improved defending under Lampard this term.

Speaking in an interview with ESPN FC, as quoted by the Daily Express, Nicol said: “The difference with Chelsea is the defending. Frank has really done a good job defensively.

“The first four games they conceded nine goals and scored four, the next four they scored 12 and lost four, that’s the way it should be.

“That tells you Frank is making changes that are making a difference.

“If Frank keeps doing what he’s doing now, keeps it tight at the back – especially Tomori – and keeps scoring goals, they’ll finish in the top four.”

Chelsea FC will return to Premier League action after the international break when they take on Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge on Saturday 19 October.
