Charlie Nicholas is backing Chelsea FC to edge to a 2-1 win over Newcastle United in their home clash in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

The Blues head into the game looking to continue the recent momentum they have found under new boss Frank Lampard.

The west London side currently find themselves in fifth place in the Premier League table and they made it back to back wins in the top flight last time out with a 4-1 victory at Southampton.

Newcastle United, meanwhile, head into Saturday’s clash fresh from their impressive 1-0 win over Manchester United at St James’ Park last time out.

Former Arsenal star Nicholas is predicting a tight game between the Blues and the Magpies at Stamford Bridge on Saturday – but he is tipping Chelsea FC to claim all three points.

Writing in his column for Sky Sports, Nicholas said: “This is everybody’s banker of the weekend, but Newcastle have gone to Tottenham and won, which people questioned.

“They then beat Manchester United at home but it wasn’t sensational. Steve Bruce will be saying that this is a free swing.

“Chelsea have the youngsters and are playing well, but they will have a roller coaster season, which is what I said from the start. These are the games that it took Liverpool years to overcome – these teams sit in and don’t threaten, but try to frustrate.

“Newcastle do this and they did it at Tottenham, this is the type of team they are.

“Chelsea will get there, but I don’t see them dominating unless they score in the first 10 minutes – I see it being tight.”

Chelsea FC are looking to maintain their place in the top four this season after they finished in third spot and won the Europa League last term under Maurizio Sarri.

The Blues brought in Lampard as Sarri’s successor back in July after the Italian opted to leave Stamford Bridge to return to his native homeland.
