The Netherlands defender has made a huge impact at Anfield since signing for the Reds from Southampton in the January transfer window back in 2018.
Van Dijk helped Liverpool FC to win the Champions League last season and finish just a point behind Manchester City in the Premier League table.
The 28-year-old was voted as the PFA player of the year, as his peers recognised the big impact he had at Anfield since linking up with Jurgen Klopp’s men.
Van Dijk and his team-mates now have their sights firmly set on winning the Premier League title this season as they aim to go one better than last term.
And former Reds star Hyypia feels that Van Dijk was the last key link in the puzzle that was missing at Anfield.
Speaking in an interview quoted by the Daily Mirror, Hyypia said: “He’s not got the armband, but he has all the attributes of a leader.
“You don’t need the armband to be a leader or an important character on the field or in the dressing room.
“We needed a leader and, when Virgil arrived, he filled that void. In my opinion, Jordan Henderson and James Milner are a good captain and vice-captain, but it’s not enough to just have two – you need maybe four or five.
“Virgil was a good addition to that and he took the weight off the other two captains.
“He gives a lot of confidence to everyone, is always talking on the field and makes everyone around him play better.
“For me, he’s the last piece of the puzzle in the search for the first Premier League title.
“Attacking-wise, we were going in the right direction, but, in defence, we needed him to close the circle.”
Liverpool FC are currently eight points clear at the top of the Premier League table as they bid to try and win the top flight trophy for the first time.
Next up for Jurgen Klopp’s men is a trip to Old Trafford to take on Manchester United next weekend.
