BBC Sport pundit: Liverpool FC star is the best around
Garth Crooks raves about Liverpool FC's defender Virgil van Dijk's recent performances for the Reds
Garth Crooks believes that Virgil van Dijk is the best defender around following his sparkling performances for Liverpool FC.
The Netherlands international helped the Reds to keep another clean sheet on Saturday as Jurgen Klopp’s men sealed a 1-0 victory at Sheffield United in the top flight.
Van Dijk missed out on the Fifa Best player of the year award as the prize was handed to Lionel Messi last week.
Nevertheless, Van Dijk was named as the PFA player of the year last season and also scooped Uefa’s player of the season away for his quality displays last term.
And BBC Sport pundit Crooks was clearly impressed by what he saw from Van Dijk as the Netherlands defender helped the Reds to make it seven wins in a row in the Premier League on Saturday.
Picking Van Dijk in his team of the week, Crooks told BBC Sport: “Well, he might not have won the Fifa Player of the Year award but he is definitely on top of my list.
“The Dutch international was back doing what he does best and that is keeping matters calm at the back for Liverpool.
“To be perfectly honest I thought the Sheffield United fans offered more of a threat than their strikers.
“United just cannot afford to miss chances when they come along but this was a day when Liverpool’s strikeforce also struggled in front of goal and Van Dijk – with his fellow defenders – bailed them out.”
Van Dijk will be expecting to start for Liverpool FC when the Reds take on Red Bull Salzburg at Anfield in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
The Reds are aiming to defend their Champions League trophy after having beaten Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in the final to win it last term.
