Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirms Man United want to sign striker in January
Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says the Red Devils are looking to sign the "right" striker in January
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed that Manchester United want to sign a striker in January if the Red Devils can identify the “right” candidate to improve their team.
Manchester United have been left lightweight in the attacking department after the Red Devils decided to sell Romelu Lukaku to Inter Milan before also loaning out Alexis Sanchez to the Serie A side.
Solskjaer’s remaining two strikers, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford, have both succumbed to injury to leave Manchester United without a recognised centre-forward with proven pedigree in the Premier League.
Mason Greenwood, 17, scored in Manchester United’s penalty shootout victory over League Two side Rochdale in the Carabao Cup third round at Old Trafford last week.
Manchester United have been linked with a host of different names of late, including Juventus forward Mario Mandzukic, Lyon striker Moussa Dembele and FC Barcelona star Ousmane Dembele.
But Solskjaer says the Red Devils are trying to identify the “right” candidate who can bring certain qualities to the Manchester United team.
“Of course, when we let Alexis (Sanchez) and (Romelu) Lukaku go, you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know it’s a forward we’re going to try to recruit next time,” Solskjaer told Sky Sports.
“It was time for Romelu Lukaku to go, though – he knows that, he didn’t want to be here, and what’s the point in having players who don’t want to be here?
“We’re looking for some creativity and goals, but they (potential signings) have to be the right one.
“There were strikers available but not the ones we wanted. We couldn’t get the one we wanted (in the summer).
“There’s no point getting players in that you are not 100% sure about either.
“When you get players in, you need the right ones that are going to stay here for a long period of time and that’s the long-term thinking we have to show.”
Manchester United finished in sixth spot in the Premier League table last season to miss out on a place in the Champions League.
The Red Devils signed Swansea winger Daniel James, Crystal Palace full-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Leicester City defender Harry Maguire in the summer transfer window.
However, Manchester United failed to sign a striker.
