‘He’s having an absolute shocker’: Pundit tells Unai Emery to drop Arsenal youngster
Charlie Nicholas urges Unai Emery to drop Matteo Guendouzi following his stuttering form for Arsenal
Charlie Nicholas has pleaded with Unai Emery to drop Matteo Guendouzi following his stuttering form in recent weeks.
The 20-year-old has been a regular fixture in the Arsenal team this season and he has started all 12 of the Gunners’ Premier League games so far this season, notching up one assist for his team-mates.
Guendouzi has also made three substitute appearances in the Europa League and he played the full 90 minutes as Arsenal slumped to a 2-0 loss to Leicester City in the Premier League at the weekend.
Arsenal boss Emery has found himself under intense pressure in recent weeks following his side’s poor form, with the Gunners having won just one of their last five games in the Premier League to leave them eight points adrift of the top four.
Guendouzi, like most of his team-mates, has been criticised for his below-par performances for the north London club in recent weeks.
And former Arsenal star Nicholas believes that it is time for Emery to drop Guendouzi and start with another player in midfield.
Speaking in an interview quoted by Metro, Nicholas said: “I like Mateo Guendouzi but he is having an absolute shocker.
“He hasn’t earned the right to get in the team and if that means that some of these youngsters come on and play well, then they stay in the team, which is what competitive edge means.”
Arsenal will return to Premier League action after the international break with a home clash against Southampton.
