‘I struggle with him’: Gary Neville blasts Arsenal midfielder
Gary Neville opens up about Granit Xhaka at Arsenal this season
Gary Neville has hit out at Granit Xhaka for his lack of discipline in recent seasons with Arsenal.
The Switzerland international was made the Gunners’ new captain earlier this season but he has come in for criticism for his displays nonetheless.
Xhaka sparked controversy on Sunday when he reacted angrily to being jeered by sections of the home fans during Arsenal’s 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace at The Emirates.
Former Manchester United defender Neville has now given his take on Xhaka and says that he has not been the midfielder’s biggest fan over the years.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Neville said: “I struggle with Xhaka full stop, I’ll be honest with you. I just think it’s his ill-discipline in his performances generally over a period of the last two or three years,” he said.
“I’ve never watched a player who seems to learn less from his experiences than Xhaka.
“He makes what must be four hundred mistimed tackles a match. He essentially gets booked every time I watch him, I don’t watch him every single game but every game I do watch he gets booked.
“He doesn’t seem to set the tone for the rest of his team-mates with his performance levels. So, what happened on Sunday doesn’t surprise me.”
Xhaka will be expecting to feature for Arsenal when the Gunners return to Premier League action with a home clash against Wolves on Saturday afternoon.
The north London side have struggled to find consistent form in the Premier League in recent games and they have won just two of their last five games in the top flight.
Arsenal are currently fifth in the Premier League table and four points adrift of Chelsea FC, who currently occupy the fourth Champions League qualification spot.
