‘He just needs time’: Unai Emery defends Arsenal summer signing
Unai Emery opens up about Nicolas Pepe's slow start to the season with Arsenal
Unai Emery has conceded that it will take some more time for Nicolas Pepe to get used to the rigours of the Premier League with Arsenal.
The Ivory Coast international became the north London side’s club-record signing in the summer when he joined the Gunners from Lille in August for around £72m.
Pepe has struggled to have much of an impact this season for the north London side, with the 24-year-old having only scored one goal in 10 Premier League appearances this term.
The African forward will be hoping to make more of an impact for the Gunners in the coming weeks as he continues to adapt to life in England.
However, Emery has insisted that it is going to take time for the attacker to get used to life in the Premier League.
Speaking in an interview with Sky Sports before Saturday’s trip to Leicester City, Emery said: “He just needs time, and to be demanding of himself.
“We are with him, working individually with him and showing him videos of where he can improve.
“The intensity of the game and the opponents in England demands a lot of you. He has to adapt to that, and we have to help him so that he can keep taking steps forward.”
Arsenal will return to Premier League action after the international break when they take on Southampton at The Emirates on 23 November.
The north London side are aiming to try and break back into the top four after having finished in fifth place in the table and without a trophy in Emery’s first campaign in charge last season.
