Arsenal are ready to battle with Tottenham Hotspur for the signature of Napoli forward Dries Mertens in the summer, according to a report in Italy.

Italian media outlet Il Mattino, as quoted by Metro, is reporting that Arsenal are interested in a deal to sign the 32-year-old when his current contract at Napoli expires at the end of the season.

The same article states that Arsenal are one of several clubs lining up a move to sign the Belgium international in the summer transfer window, including Tottenham Hotspur.

According to the same story, both Arsenal and Tottenham have “taken information” about Mertens ahead of a potential swoop to sign the experienced Napoli star.

The report goes on to add that Serie A trio Juventus, AC Milan and Inter Milan have all been linked with the Napoli forward over the past couple of months.

Mertens has scored 116 goals in 295 games in all competitions over the past seven seasons at Napoli.

The Belgian forward has won the Coppa Italia and the Supercoppa Italiana.

Arsenal signed six new players in the summer transfer window as Unai Emery looked to overhaul his Gunners squad.

The north London side are in sixth place in the Premier League table and eight points adrift of Manchester City in fourth spot.
