BT Sport pundit reacts to Mateo Kovacic’s display in Chelsea FC’s 2-2 draw at Valencia
Joe Cole has his say on Mateo Kovacic's performance in Chelsea FC's 2-2 draw with Valencia on Wednesday night
Joe Cole reserved special praise for Mateo Kovacic after the midfielder scored his first Chelsea FC goal in the 2-2 draw with Valencia in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
The Croatia midfielder equalised with a low shot into the bottom corner in the 41st minute after Carlos Soler had given the home side the lead just moments earlier.
The goal was Kovacic’s first for Chelsea FC and it helped the Blues to immediately get back into the game in Spain.
Christian Pulisic then made it 2-1 to the Blues when he scored in the 53rd minute from close range, with the goal being awarded after a lengthy VAR review for offside.
Kepa Arrizabalaga saved a penalty from Dani Parejo in the 65th minute to deny Valencia an equaliser, but the home side netted an equaliser in the 82nd minute when Daniel Wass’ cross fooled the Blues goalkeeper.
Kovacic has been in good form for Chelsea FC this season, making two assists in 13 Premier League games for the Blues this term.
And speaking during BT Sport‘s coverage of the game, Cole praised Kovacic for his display and for grabbing an important goal.
Discussing Kovacic’s goal, Cole said: “He’s got great ability, technically he’s good. You think to yourself, it’s unbelievable that he’s not scored goals.
“The cross comes in, he picks up the position on the edge of the box. His touch is brilliant because it gives him the opportunity to hit it first time. It’s not easy.”
He added: “You look at his face afterwards, he was surprised it went in because it’s been such a long time for him.
“He wasn’t having as good a game as he has been recently but he popped up and got a goal.”
The west London side will return to Premier League action on Saturday afternoon when they host West Ham United in the top flight at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea FC are looking to try and return to winning ways in the top flight after they were beaten 2-1 by Manchester City last weekend.
