Ed Woodward was eager to bring Marco Verratti and Raphael Varane to Manchester United before he stepped aside from the recruitment side of the club, according to a report in England.

Manchester Evening News is reporting that the Manchester United vice chairman wanted to bolster the Red Devils squad with the addition of the Paris Saint-Germain defender and the Real Madrid centre-half.

The same article states that Woodward’s dream signings didn’t come to fruiting as then manager Jose Mourinho didn’t believe the 20-time English champions could sign Varane or Verratti.

According to the same story, Manchester United ended up signing Brazilian midfielder Fred, Portuguese full-back Diogo Dalot and Stoke goalkeeper Lee Grant.

Manchester Evening News added that the Red Devils may have missed a trick missing out on Varane given the France international was a boyhood Manchester United supporter.

The Red Devils have made a disappointing start to the Premier League season following a return of 13 points from their opening 11 games.

Manchester United are in tenth spot in the Premier League table and 10 points adrift of fourth-placed Chelsea FC.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side lost 1-0 to Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium last weekend.

The 20-time English champions will return to Premier League action with a home clash against Brighton at Old Trafford.
