Michael Owen is backing Manchester City to claim the three points when the defending champions make the trip to Newcastle United on Saturday lunchtime.

The Citizens are aiming to claim a win at St Mary’s and cut Liverpool FC’s lead at the top of the table down to six points, before the Reds take on Brighton later in the day.

Manchester City have been in brilliant form in recent weeks, and Pep Guardiola’s men have won four of their last five outings in the top flight to leave them third in the table and nine points behind leaders Liverpool FC.

Guardiola’s side have drawn one and lost three of their opening 13 Premier League games this season and they will be eager to claim the three points this weekend as the hectic festive period looms large.

They head into the game on the back of their 2-1 win over Chelsea FC at The Etihad last weekend – and England legend Owen is backing the Citizens to claim all three points when they travel to face the Magpies this weekend.

Writing in his column for BetVictor, Owen said: “I was disappointed with Newcastle at Villa Park on Monday and their attacking players continue to struggle to create opportunities let alone score goals at present.

“Steve Bruce’s side will have to be at the top of their game when champions Manchester City come to town in Saturday’s early kick-off.

“Yes, the Magpies came from behind to win the corresponding fixture 2-1 at St James’ Park last season, but I don’t expect Pep Guardiola’s side to slip up at the weekend given they have the opportunity to cut the deficit – albeit briefly – to leaders Liverpool to six points with a win.”

Manchester City will then travel to Burnley in their next Premier League game on Tuesday night, before a crunch home clash against Manchester United next weekend.
