Owen Hargreaves believes that neither Arsenal nor Manchester United will finish in the Premier League’s top four this season.

The Gunners and the Red Devils have struggled to find consistent form in the Premier League all season and both teams are currently off the pace in the race for Champions League qualification.

Arsenal are languishing down in ninth place in the Premier League table after a poor start to the new campaign.

Manchester United, meanwhile, are fifth in the table and five points behind fourth-placed Chelsea FC heading into this weekend’s round of fixtures.

Both teams have booked their places in the last 32 of the Europa League, and winning Europe’s second tier club competition could be their best bet for Champions League qualification for both sides, according to former Red Devils midfielder Hargreaves.

Speaking before Arsenal’s 2-2 draw with Standard Liege on Thursday night, Hargreaves told BT Sport: “You think for Arsenal and Manchester United they are not going to finish in the top four so they have to find a way to win this competition [the Europa League].

“For Arsenal this competition is huge. But with Inter coming into this competition…with Salzburg and Ajax, Champions League semi-finalists last year, there are some really good teams in here.

“So I think for Arsenal and Manchester United winning the Europa League definitely isn’t as easy as it looks in the group stages.”

Arsenal will return to Premier League action on Sunday afternoon with a crunch clash against Manchester City at The Emirates.

Manchester United, meanwhile, are preparing for a home game against Everton at Old Trafford as they look to make it three wins in a row in the Premier League.
