Michael Owen reveals his prediction for CFR Cluj v Celtic
Michael Owen looks ahead to Celtic's trip to CFR Cluj in the Europa League on Thursday night
Michael Owen is backing CFR Cluj to claim a victory over Celtic in the Europa League group stage on Thursday night.
Celtic head into the game having already booked their spot in the last 32 of Europe’s second tier club competition.
The Scottish side head to Transylvania for the second time this season in high spirits after securing top spot in Group E with a game to spare.
Hosts Cluj were the team that eliminated the Glasgow side from the Champions League third qualifying round in the summer – and the Romanian side are now bidding to secure their own spot in the last 32 of the Europa League.
Former Manchester United and Liverpool FC striker Owen feels that the hosts are likely to have the upper-hand during the game given that Celtic have already booked their spot in the knockout phase.
Writing in his column for BetVictor, Owen said: “Celtic are already through to the last 32 as group winners and will be joined by the Romanians if the hosts avoid defeat on Thursday.
“The Bhoys rode their luck against Rangers in the League Cup Final on Sunday at Hampden Park and that was a very energy-sapping game for Neil Lennon’s side.
“This will be Celtic’s second visit to Transylvania this season having drew 1-1 with Cluj in the Champions League qualifiers back in August.
“Celtic have won their last four games in the competition, but they have little to play for and I think that the hosts will get the result they need to join the Hoops in the knock-out stages.”
Celtic will return to domestic action this weekend when they take on Hibernian at home on Sunday afternoon.
After that, they will take on Hearts away from home on Wednesday 18 December.
Celtic are currently flying high at the top of the Scottish Premiership after having won 13 of their 15 games in the top flight so far this season.
