Frank Lampard has revealed that he opted to start N’Golo Kante on the bench for Chelsea FC’s home clash with West Ham United on Saturday because the midfielder needed a rest.

Kante has struggled with a string of injury problems this season and he was named on the bench for the Blues’ surprise 1-0 defeat by the Hammers at Stamford Bridge at the weekend.

The France international did come off the bench to play the final 27 minutes of the London derby clash, but Kante was unable to help the Blues conjure an equaliser in front of their home fans.

Kante has been in good form for Chelsea FC in recent weeks and the decision to bench him for Saturday’s clash raised some eyebrows.

Lampard has now explained exactly why he opted to leave the World Cup winner on the bench for the start of the Premier League clash.

Asked about Kante in an interview quoted by the Daily Express after the game, Lampard said: “I’ve listened to three or four months of the medical team telling me that no one has given him rest and that’s why he’s had problems this season.

“So after two big and physical games for him, it felt the right thing to do in terms of giving him a [rest] with what we have coming up.”

He continued: “I just expect more from us whatever the personnel.

“That good problem means that whoever you pick in there can be doing what we did in there today.

“I get that. Sometimes you can have down days.”

Kante will be hoping to start for Chelsea FC when the Blues return to Premier League action on Wednesday night with a home clash against Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues are currently in fourth place in the Premier League table.
