Paul Merson identifies three signings Chelsea FC need in January
Arsenal legend Paul Merson says Chelsea FC need to improve in three key areas in the January transfer window
Paul Merson says Chelsea FC need to sign the “right three players” if Frank Lampard wants to steer the Blues to a top-four finish this season.
Chelsea FC slumped to a surprise 1-0 loss to Bournemouth in the Premier League on Saturday following Dan Gosling’s 84th-minute winner.
The Blues have loosened their grip on a top-four place over the past couple of weeks following losses to Manchester City, West Ham, Everton and Bournemouth.
Despite their domestic blip, Chelsea FC have managed to quality for the Champions League round of 16 after a 2-1 win over Ligue 1 side Lille in their final group-stage fixture.
The west London outfit had their transfer ban overturned by Fifa earlier this month, which means Chelsea FC can sign new players in the January window.
Sky Sports pundit Merson says Chelsea FC need a centre-half, centre-forward and left-back in the January transfer window to bolster their hopes of securing a top-four finish.
“If Chelsea do the right deals in January they can book their ticket to a top four finish now their transfer ban has been lifted,” Merson told the Daily Star.
“They are right in the hunt already but they have teams breathing down their neck now and the youngsters could do with some help.
“They need a centre forward to take the load off Tammy Abraham for a start. He’s done brilliantly but you can’t rely on him alone for the rest of the season.
“I think Olivier Giroud will go. He’s hardly played and isn’t getting any younger. So they will need to replace him.
“They might need a more experienced centre half if Antonio Rudiger isn’t going to be 100 per cent for the rest of the season – and they need a left back as well.
“But they don’t need major surgery. I don’t think they will spend big. Frank Lampard was a hard-working player. He will only want to buy that type of player.
“He won’t want to be paying £80m for a superstar who just does enough in training and doesn’t pull his weight in matches.
“Chelsea’s kids have done well but there are times when they will need to be taken out of the team. Buy the right three players and I think they’re guaranteed to make the Champions League.”
Chelsea FC were banned from signing new players in the summer, although Mateo Kovacic and Christian Pulisic arrived in prearranged deals before their transfer restrictions were imposed.
The Blues will take on their London rivals Tottenham Hotspur at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in their next Premier League fixture on Sunday 22 December.
Former Chelsea FC manager Jose Mourinho is currently in charge at Spurs.
