Michael Owen states his prediction for Chelsea FC v Lille
Former Liverpool FC striker Michael Owen is backing Chelsea FC to beat Lille in the Champions League on Tuesday evening
Michael Owen is backing Chelsea FC to progress to the Champions League knockout stage on Tuesday night thanks to victory over Lille.
The Blues need to beat the Ligue 1 side to be assured of their place in the Champions League round of 16 under Frank Lampard in his first season in charge.
Chelsea will go through if they beat Lille, or if they draw and Valencia lose to Ajax.
Lampard’s side could even finish top of the group if events conspire to go their way on Tuesday night and the London side beat Lille while Ajax and Valencia share the spoils.
Chelsea FC slumped to a surprise 3-1 loss to Everton at Goodison Park at the weekend to lose for the third time in four Premier League games.
Former Liverpool FC striker Owen is backing Chelsea FC to beat Lille to secure their spot in the Champions League last-16 draw later this week.
“A win will ensure Chelsea’s place in the last 16 against a Lille side who have won their last three league games 1-0 although they have only picked up a single point in their five previous group games in the competition,” Owen told BetVictor.
“The Blues won the reverse fixture 2-1 in France on Matchday 2 and Lille are without a win in their last seven away games in European competition.
“Chelsea continue to struggle to keep clean sheets – just three in 12 home games in all competitions this season – and Lille can play their part in what promises to be a terrific occasion at Stamford Bridge.”
Chelsea FC were 2-1 winners against Lille in the reverse fixture in France thanks to goals from Tammy Abraham and Willian.
The Blues won the Europa League without suffering a defeat under Lampard’s predecessor Maurizio Sarri last term.
Chelsea FC lost their first Uefa game in over a season when the Blues slumped to a 1-0 loss to Valencia in their group-stage opener.
