Jurgen Klopp gives latest Liverpool FC injury update on Georginio Wijnaldum
Liverpool FC manager Jurgen Klopp provides an update on Georginio Wijnaldum
Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Netherlands international Georginio Wijnaldum suffered a muscle injury in Liverpool FC’s 2-0 victory over Watford on Saturday afternoon.
The Dutch midfielder was forced off in the 59th minute due to the muscle problem ahead of a hectic festive fixture schedule for the Premier League leaders.
Wijnaldum was replaced by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain as Liverpool FC eased to a comfortable three points against the Premier League’s bottom team.
Mohamed Salah scored either side of half-time to help the Reds extend their lead to 10 points at the top of the Premier League table.
Wijnaldum was due to travel with the Liverpool FC squad to Qatar for the World Club Cup next week as the Reds look to win the prestigious competition.
However, Klopp was still unsure the severity and the location of the injury, although the Liverpool FC boss did confirm Wijnaldum had incurred a muscle problem.
“Muscle. I don’t know anything else,” Klopp said about Wijnaldum’s injury at his post-match news conference.
“[Whether he can travel to Qatar] is actually in the moment one of my smallest concerns – he could probably fly – but my problem is more what exactly the injury is and I don’t know that yet.
“It’s a muscle thing and you never want to have a muscle injury.
“But in these moments it always makes it immediately more difficult, but it’s not only us, all other teams have the same problems. We have to deal with these situations, that’s clear.
“We will see – tomorrow we know more.”
Liverpool FC haven’t won the Premier League title since the competition’s inception in 1992.
The Merseyside outfit are in their best-ever position to secure top-flight glory given their 10-point lead at the top of the Premier League table.
Liverpool FC will return to Premier League action with a trip to second-placed Leicester City on Boxing Day.
The Reds will learn their Champions League last-16 opponents on Monday.
