John Barnes says Naby Keita needs to continue to prove that he can do bring something different to the Liverpool FC team.

The Guinea international has enjoyed a good few days in the Reds side after Keita scored twice in successive games in all competitions.

Keita scored a goal and made an assist in the 3-0 victory over Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium last weekend.

The 24-year-old then broke the deadlock in the 2-0 win over Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

Keita has made just three Premier League appearances in the current campaign after an injury-hit start to the season.

The African midfielder has to compete with Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Fabinho, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Xherdan Shaqiri for a starting spot.

Former Liverpool FC midfielder Barnes believes Keita needs to continue to bring something a little different to Jurgen Klopp’s team.

“Naby Keita didn’t force himself back in,” Barnes told BonusCodeBets.

“It’s not a case of some players playing badly and Naby (Keita) getting back in, he’s got to look at the current set up and have the staff think ‘we’re going to give him an opportunity’ ahead of Oxlade Chamberlain.

“What you want is for a number of players who can perform when they’re called upon like Shaqiri and Origi did, and Wijnaldum, Henderson, Milner all doing fantastic.

“Other than the goalkeeper, Van Dijk and the front three, when everybody is fit no other player can say ‘we are always going to be in the team’.”

Liverpool FC signed Keita in a £48m deal from Bundesliga side RB Leipzig in the 2018 summer transfer window.

Keita has scored five times in 43 games in all competitions over the past two seasons.

Liverpool FC – who beat Watford 2-0 on Saturday – will take on Aston Villa in the League Cup quarter-finals on Tuesday night away from home.
