Jurgen Klopp insists he never doubted 24-year-old Liverpool FC star
Liverpool FC boss Jurgen Klopp says he never doubted Naby Keita
Jurgen Klopp says he never lost faith in Liverpool FC star Naby Keita in spite of his slow start to his Anfield career.
The Guinea international started his first Premier League game of the 2019-20 season at Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon.
Keita produced an influential performance in the middle of the park after he scored Liverpool FC’s second goal at the Vitality Stadium.
The former RB Leipzig star turned provider in the second half when Keita produced a brilliantly timed pass to tee up Mohamed Salah.
The 24-year-old’s creative performance earned him the man of the match award in Liverpool FC’s 3-0 victory over Bournemouth in the Premier League.
Keita’s impact at Liverpool FC has been limited by injuries since his £48m move to the Merseyside outfit from RB Leipzig in the 2018 summer transfer window.
However, Klopp says he never lost faith in the Liverpool FC midfielder despite his persistent injury problems.
“We are not flying, it’s not like we won all of the games 4-0, or 5-0, so we had to bring on a player who helps us with defending set-pieces,” Klopp is quoted as saying by BBC Sport.
“Then Naby is sitting outside thinking, ‘why don’t I play?’ I get all that.
“So we stayed in contact, we talked and we spoke a lot about it.
“But in the end of course a player needs to have this evidence that the manager still believes in you. I was never in doubt about that.”
He added: “Naby had injuries, the team is in really good shape, so then do you change?
“It was just unlucky and in life you always need luck.”
Keita was part of the Liverpool FC squad that won the Champions League title last season thanks to a 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the final.
The Reds are sitting eight points clear of Leicester City in the Premier League title race ahead of their home clash against Watford next weekend.
Liverpool FC will travel to RB Salzburg in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
