Michael Owen is tipping Manchester City to beat Manchester United in an exciting derby clash at The Etihad on Saturday evening.

The defending Premier League champions will welcome their local rivals to Eastlands in pursuit of a much-needed win given Liverpool FC’s 11-point advantage over Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola’s side laid down a marker at Turf Moor on Tuesday night with a commanding performance in a 4-1 victory over Burnley in the mid-week round of fixtures.

Manchester City lost 3-1 to Liverpool FC at Anfield last month to suffer their third defeat of the Premier League season.

Manchester United, meanwhile, secured a morale-boosting victory at Old Trafford on Wednesday night thanks to a 2-1 win against Tottenham Hotspur.

Marcus Rashford scored either side of half-time to secure three valuable points and hoist Manchester United above Spurs in the top-four race.

Former Manchester United striker Owen is backing Manchester City to beat their derby rivals in a high-scoring game at The Etihad on Saturday evening.

“The 179th Manchester derby and City, who did the double over United last season, are taken to maintain their recent supremacy against their local rivals at the Etihad Stadium,” Owen told BetVictor.

“Both sides have scored in three of the last four games between the teams and I would be surprised if we didn’t see goals in Saturday’s late kick-off.

“City were comfortable winners at Turf Moor midweek, but once against they failed to keep a clean sheet while a Marcus Rashford inspired United gained a much-needed three points against Jose Mourinho’s Spurs on Wednesday.”

Manchester City have won the Premier League title in the last two seasons under Guardiola.

Manchester United, on the other hand, haven’t lifted the top-flight trophy since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013.

The Red Devils are in sixth place and 11 points adrift of Manchester City in third spot.
