Ryan Giggs: The player Man United need to take ‘next step’
Ryan Giggs says Manchester United need Paul Pogba back to take the "next step" after their derby triumph
Ryan Giggs says Manchester United need Paul Pogba to take the “next step” after their derby triumph at The Etihad on Saturday evening.
The Red Devils secured a surprise 2-1 victory over defending Premier League champions Manchester City in the derby at The Etihad.
Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial scored in the first half before the Red Devils hung on for the final 60 minutes.
Nicolas Otamendi halved the deficit in the 85th minute before David De Gea produced a big save to keep out Kevin De Bruyne in the final minutes of the derby clash.
Pogba hasn’t featured for Manchester United since a 1-1 draw with top-six rivals Arsenal back at the end of September.
The World Cup winner is currently sidelined with a knee problem amid uncertainty surrounding his long-term future at the Old Trafford outfit.
Former Manchester United winger Giggs says the Red Devils need Pogba to take the next step under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
“It’s huge. The confidence it gives you, that you can produce that performance,” Giggs was quoted as saying by Metro after Saturday’s win.
“All big games you need that concentration and that’s what the players had both defensively and when they won the ball making sure that pass forward was good, the touch was good and then as we’ve seen players flying off and causing City big problems.
“I think we all know United’s record against the big teams when the big teams open up and we can expose on the counter-attack, the next step is breaking teams down.
“And that’s where we have to get Paul Pogba back – he’s the one who can unlock the door. Get him back playing well and consistently, that’s the next step.
“We’ve seen the record, I think every team above United we’re unbeaten. It’s the teams below who make it difficult at Old Trafford where you’ve got to be patient, that’s the next step now.
“But that was a fantastic performance, the best performance I’ve seen for a long time from a United team.”
Pogba moved back to Manchester United in an £89m deal from Serie A giants Juventus in a club record transfer in 2016.
The France star has won the Europa League and the League Cup since his return to the Premier League giants.
However, Pogba has struggled to consistently hit top form for the 20-time English champions.
