Paul Merson is convinced that Manchester United have what it takes to catch Chelsea FC in the race for a top-four finish this season.

The Red Devils have been enjoying something of a mini-resurgence under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in recent games and they have won their last two games in the Premier League with impressive victories over both Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City.

Chelsea FC, meanwhile, have been enduring a blip in form in the Premier League, with Frank Lampard’s men having lost three of their last four games in the top flight to dent their top-four bid.

The west London side are currently fourth in the Premier League table but Manchester United are just five points behind the Blues heading into the hectic festive period in the Premier League.

And former Arsenal star Merson believes that the likes of Chelsea FC, Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester United are all vying for top-four finishes as things stand.

Writing in his column for Sky Sports, Merson said: “Can Manchester United catch Chelsea in fourth? 100 per cent! There’s a long way to go.

“Chelsea are a young side and are going to have their ups and downs.

“Spurs aren’t going to be far away either now Jose Mourinho has been appointed.

“You’ve got Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham, Manchester United, four big football clubs, vying for what looks to be one spot in the top four.”

Manchester United will return to Premier League action this weekend with a home clash against Everton on Sunday afternoon.

Chelsea FC, meanwhile, are preparing to take on Bournemouth in the Premier League on Saturday at home after having beaten Lille in the Champions League to reach the knockout phase on Tuesday night.
