Ole Gunnar Solskjaer talks up ‘fantastic’ Man United star out on loan
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been thrilled by Chris Smalling's displays for AS Roma so far this season
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been delighted by Chris Smalling’s performances for AS Roma out on loan from Manchester United this season.
The defender was shipped out to the Serie A club after having been deemed surplus to requirements at Old Trafford by Solskjaer in the summer.
The 30-year-old has been in good form for AS Roma this season and has scored two goals and made one assist in 11 Serie A games for the Italian side.
He has also featured three times in the Europa League this season, making a total of 14 appearances in all competitions so far this season.
It remains to be seen whether Smalling has a long-term future at Old Trafford or not, but his manager Solskjaer says he has been happy with what he has seen from the defender during his spell in Italy so far.
Speaking at a news conference on Friday, Solskjaer said: “Chris has been fantastic.
“We know that sometimes if you change the environment it can go both ways.
“Chris is the type to relish these challenges and he’s cultured and he enjoys life there.
“It’s a different life, it’s a new experience for him. He’s a boy who, he couldn’t be here without being a regular and we decided on that and I’m so, so happy for him, because we can see the top player that he is.”
Manchester United will return to Premier League action on Sunday 15 December when they host Everton at Old Trafford.
Solskjaer has been tasked with trying to steer Manchester United back into the top four this term after they finished sixth last season and without a trophy.
