Georginio Wijnaldum is a Dutch footballer who currently plays for Premier League club Liverpool FC.

The versatile midfielder started his professional career at Rotterdam before PSV Eindhoven signed Wijnaldum in 2011.

Georginio spent four seasons at PSV before he moved to Newcastle United in 2015 following their Eredivisie title success in 2015.

Wijnaldum was unable to help Newcastle avoid relegation to the Championship in 2016 and joined Liverpool FC in a £23m deal ahead of the 2016-17 season.

The Dutch footballer has established himself as a key member of Jurgen Klopp’s team during his spell at Anfield.

Wijnaldum has scored eight times in 45 games for the Netherlands national team since making his debut in 2011.

Wijnaldum was born and raised in Rotterdam.

He played for his hometown club Sparta Rotterdam as a youngster where he won two youth titles.

Dutch giants Ajax, Feyenoord and PSV Eindhoven were soon interested in Wijnaldum following his excellent performances at underage level.

Georginio opted to move to Feyenoord where he linked up with Swansea City star Leroy Fer.

He became the youngest ever player to represent Feyenoord at the age of 16 and 148 days when the Dutch midfielder made his debut in a 4-0 win over Groningen on 8 April 2007.

Wijnaldum got his first taste of European football when he lined up against Kalmar FF in the Uefa Cup in 2008. In the second leg, Wijnaldum scored his first goal for the Dutch team.

In March 2009, Georginio signed a three-and-a-half year contract with Feyenoord.

Wijnaldum finished the season with five goals in 45 appearances in all competitions under 2008-09.

He continued to grow in importance in the 2009-10 before Wijnaldum established himself as a top Eredivisie player in his final season at Feyenoord.

The playmaker scored 14 goal in 34 games in the Dutch top flight. This included an incredible four-goal haul in a commanding victory over Groningen.

PSV Eindhoven

PSV Eindhoven signed Wijnaldum in a £5m deal from Feyenoord in the 2011 summer transfer window.

He made his PSV debut in a 3-1 loss to AZ Alkmaar in their opening game of the 2011-12 Eredivisie season.

His first of 14 goals in his first season at PSV came in a 3–0 victory against ADO Den Haag.

Georginio ended the season with the KNVB Cup thanks to a 3-0 win over Heracles Almelo.

Wijnaldum’s growing importance to PSV was evident when he was handed the captain’s armband for the 2013-14 season following Mark van Bommel’s retirement and Kevin Strootman’s move to Serie A side AS Roma.

However, a back problem limited Georginio to a return of four goals in 15 games in all competitions.

Wijnaldum was instrumental in PSV’s title success in the 2014-15 season alongside former Manchester United winger Memphis Depay.

The Dutch footballer scored 14 goals in 34 games to help PSV win their first top-flight crown since 2014.

Georginio was named the Dutch footballer of the year for his talismanic performances.

Newcastle United

Wijnaldum signed a five-year contract with Newcastle United in July 2015 after the Premier League club agreed a £14.5m deal with Dutch champions PSV.

Georginio scored on his Newcastle debut in a 2-2 draw with Southampton at St James’ Park. He netted his second goal in a 2-2 stalemate with Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea FC side.

Remarkably Wijnaldum scored four times in the same game for the second time in his career when Georginio helped Newcastle to ease to a 6-2 win over Norwich City.

The Dutch footballer caught the attention of Liverpool FC when he was instrumental in a 2-0 win over the Reds at St James’ Park thanks to a goal.

He proved a key part of the Newcastle team fighting relegation and continued his record of scoring against the league’s biggest clubs with efforts against Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.

Wijnaldum finished the 2015-16 Premier League campaign with 11 goals in 38 games but couldn’t help the Magpies avoid relegation to the Championship.

Liverpool FC

Liverpool FC completed a £23m deal to sign Georginio from Newcastle on 22 July 2016.

Wijnaldum signed a five-year deal with the Merseyside outfit to remain in the Premier League despite Newcastle’s relegation.

The Reds handed the Dutch midfielder the number five shirt.

He made his debut in Liverpool FC’s dramatic 4-3 win against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on 14 August 2016.

Wijnaldum opened his Liverpool FC account with a goal in the Reds’ 6-1 win against Watford at Anfield in November.

Georginio netted his second goal for the Reds in Liverpool FC’s 1-0 victory over Manchester City on New Year’s Eve.

He scored another important goal as Jurgen Klopp side secured a 1-1 draw with champions elect Chelsea FC in February 2017.

Wijnaldum scored in successive Premier League games to help Liverpool FC beat Arsenal and Burnley to help the Reds keep on track in the top-four race.

Georginio finished the 2016-17 season with a goal and an assist to help Liverpool FC beat Middlesbrough 3-0 and secure fourth place in the table to book their place in the Champions League.

The Dutch midfielder scored nine goals and made nine assists in 44 games in all competitions in his debut campaign at Anfield.

Wijnaldum opened his Premier League account for the 2017-18 season with a goal in a 3-0 win at Huddersfield Town on 28 October 2017.

The Dutch midfielder started six of Liverpool FC’s opening nine Champions League games, making an assist in a 5-0 win at Porto in the last 16.

He scored his first away goal for the Merseyside outfit in Liverpool FC’s 4-2 loss to AS Roma in the semi-finals.

Wijnaldum started Liverpool FC’s 3-1 loss to Real Madrid in the Champions League final.

International career

Georginio made his Netherlands debut and scored his first international goal in an 11-0 win over San Marino on 2 September 2011.

Wijnaldum was part of the Netherlands squad that reached the World Cup semi-finals in Brazil in 2014.

The Dutch midfielder scored their second goal in a 3-0 victory over Brazil in the third-placed playoff.

Georginio has scored eight times in 45 appearances for the Netherlands national team.

Personal life

Wijnaldum has two younger brothers who are also professional footballers.

Giliano, 25, plays for Dutch team Willem II after a spell in the United States with the Philadelphia Union.

Rajiv van La Parra is Georginio’s half brother and the winger is currently at Premier League club Huddersfield Town.

Wijnaldum is dating long-term girlfriend Virginia Braaf.

While the Liverpool FC star likes to keep his relationship private with Virginia, who he met at the age of 12 at school.

However, the midfielder revealed that his partner had given birth to his third child, a son called Jacian Emile.

His two older daughters are called Ki-yeann and Aysïa-Mae.
