Mikel Arteta has hailed Alexis Sánchez as one of the world’s best strikers after the Chilean completed a £35m switch to Arsenal from Barcelona.

The 25-year-old South American has signed a long-term deal with the north London side after completing his medical at the Gunners’s Colney training ground on Thursday.

It’s a big statement for the club to say early on [in the transfer window], ‘OK let’s go and get one of the best strikers in the world at the moment’.

Sánchez, who was one of the stars of the World Cup thanks to his two-goal haul, netted 47 times in 141 appearances for the Catalan side during a three-year spell at Camp Nou.

And Arsenal captain Arteta was thrilled to land a big-name signing like Sánchez to bolster the Gunners’s attacking options for the new season.

“I’m really happy, everyone was waiting for a big signing like this. He’s a proper player, he’s got experience, he’s got the technique and he’s got the pace,” Arteta told talkSPORT.

“I met him this morning and he looked excited. He had many options and he decided to join us which makes us very proud. He likes the sound of the Arsenal and I’m excited by his arrival.

“It’s a big statement for the club to say early on [in the transfer window], ‘OK let’s go and get one of the best strikers in the world at the moment.’

“They have convinced him to come and I can’t wait to see him play.”
