Alvaro Negredo hit a hat-trick as Manchester City thrashed West Ham United 6-0 in the first leg of their League Cup semi-final.

The Spaniard scored twice in the opening 26 minutes to put City in charge, and Yaya Toure added a third goal five minutes before half-time.

Negredo completed his treble in the 52nd minute, before Edin Dzeko added a further two goals to all but secure City’s place in the Wembley final.

The mauling inevitably prompted plenty of activity on Twitter – and here are our favourite updates, in chronological order.

Tottenham defender Kyle Walker ‏(@kylewalker2) points out the Hammers’ schooling: “Football lesson at the Etihad”

Ex-Arsenal man John Hartson ‏(@JohnHartson10) feels for the fans: “This must be hard to take for West Ham fans it’s bordering on shambolic .Their punters deserve so much better.”

Former Bolton captain Kevin Davies (‏@Kevin__Davies) tells Allardyce to get his priorities straight: “Yikes 30 minutes left yet, think Sam may have to rest players in second leg now. #concentrateonstayingup”

Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler ‏(@Robbie9Fowler) makes a valid point: “Me thinks Roger Johnson will remember this debut”

Ex-Hammer Shaka Hislop ‏(@ShakaHislop) is worried: “The players couldn’t look less interested, #MCFC v #WHUFC, lying to myself and saying it’s because it’s the Cup and not the score.”

Derby County’s Jeff Hendrick ‏(@JeffHendrick92) feels sorry for Adrian in the visitors’ goal: “West ham keeper is playing good.. But he has still let 5 in”

Ex-Norwich man Darren Huckerby (‏@hucks6dh6) feels the Hammers are inviting pressure: “If the West Ham back 4 dropped any deeper they’d be back at Maine Road! #PanicStations #Mcfc”

Former boxer and City fan Ricky Hatton ‏(@HitmanHatton) is a happy chap: “6-0. Talk about found our feet now. Blue army.”

Ex-Aston Villa man Ian Taylor ‏(@IanTaylor7) finds the post-match interview amusing: “Love the fact that @EdDzeko had lost count of how many #MCFC had scored!! #CapitalOneCup”

City defender Pablo Zabaleta (‏@pablo_zabaleta) praises the star of the show and posts the picture above: “Congratulations to my friend @_AlvaroNegredo_ for the hat-trick!!!!”

Skipper Vincent Kompany ‏(@VincentKompany) is understandably thrilled: “Couldn’t have done any better today. City 6 – 0 West ham. #MCFC #CapitalOneCup”

And hat-trick hero Alvaro Negredo (‏@_AlvaroNegredo_) has the final say: “Good performance of the teammates. I’m very happy with my 3 goals too! Here is the ball of the match..”
