André-Villas Boas has called on Chelsea supporters to be more vocal at Stamford Bridge following their Carling Cup defeat by Liverpool.

Maxi Rodríguez scored his second goal in a fortnight in west London to put Liverpool ahead after 58 minutes and Martin Kelly headed past Blues goalkeeper Ross Turnbull five minutes later to seal a 2-0 victory.

Villas-Boas’s side have now suffered three defeats in their last four games – and the Portuguese manager admits Chelsea need the full backing of their fans to help turn their poor run around.

“Away from home we’ve been more solid statistically and as a team,” said Villas-Boas. “At home we just haven’t been good enough.

“We need to get our fans behind us and get the emotion right. You can feel Stamford Bridge has become anxious.

“We therefore need support. We need atmosphere to get us past this period.

“We have two big games at home where we need our fans behind us and I’m sure they’ll do exactly that.”

Villas-Boas handed Fernando Torres his first start in November but the striker had little joy against his former employers.

And despite struggling since his £50m move to Stamford Bridge, Villas-Boas is still backing the Spain striker to come good at Chelsea.

“It will come with confidence and time. We believe in him and will continue to pursue his individual form,” said the 34-year-old.

“Our task as technical staff is to get the best out of players and if we don’t do that then we have failed.

“It takes time and Fernando faces a tough time. He must compete because at the moment Didier Drogba is showing good signs.”
