Andre Villas-Boas admits that losing Jermain Defoe for the next three games due to a muscle injury is a “big blow” for Tottenham Hotspur.

The Tottenham manager confirmed that the 30-year-old striker will miss Thursday’s Europa League quarter-final first leg against Basel, as well as the Premier League clash with Everton at the weekend.

“Jermain has a muscle injury that is going to take him out of the next two games definitely, and maybe Basel away,” said Villas-Boas.

“If he can’t make Basel away, he should be fit [for the] week when we prepare for Manchester City.

“It’s a big blow. It’s the same muscle that he had a small tear on last month but on the other side now.

“Obviously he’s a big miss because he’s a player who represents a lot for us and shown tremendous quality this season.”

Looking ahead to Thursday’s clash with Basel at White Hart Lane, Villas-Boas admitted he is wary of the threat posed by the Swiss side, who famously beat Manchester United in the Champions League last term.

“They have recent European experience that we don’t have,” continued the Tottenham boss.

“They have had tremendous results recently in past years against Manchester United, Sporting Lisbon. They are extremely successful at home and one of the best clubs in the country.

“The key to this game will be both teams’ motivations.

“We have to admit that we have superior players but the fact the Basel have played [in the] Champions League and that they are a winning team makes them also one of the favourites. They put out Zenit and it will be a tough game.”
