Arsenal forward Andrey Arshavin admits he is at a loss to explain his recent string of below-par performances.

Despite starting the season brightly the 29-year-old Russia international has lost his place in Arsene Wenger’s first choice eleven and has started just one Premier League match since 13 December.

Arshavin, who joined Arsenal from Zenit St Petersburg in January 2009, admits he is not used to being used as a substitute but is confident he can soon turn the corner after producing an improved display against Ipswich in midweek.

“It’s true that, at the moment, I’m not happy with how I’m playing,” Arshavin told Arsenal’s Matchday Programme. “I feel that I’m making mistakes that I shouldn’t be – not giving good passes and losing a lot of balls.

“It’s hard to give reasons but I am working hard to get back to my best and am confident it will come.

“It’s an unusual situation because I’m not used to being on the bench this much. Maybe I had one period like this back at Zenit St Petersburg but it was a bit shorter. I can’t complain when the team is doing this well, though – our recent form in the league has been excellent.”

The attacker earlier this week also told The Sun that he is worried his years are catching up with him. He said: “I do not have enough acceleration. From the very start of this season I felt I’m fast enough only in separate episodes. The reason? I don’t know. Maybe I’m just getting old.”

Arshavin also believes that Arsenal’s 3-1 win over reigning champions Chelsea in December has proved a turning point in the gunners’ season. He added: “I look at the Chelsea game and think that maybe it turned our season.

“We’ll see, of course, but since this game we’ve done very well and our level has been good. I think that game can help us considerably over the rest of the season.”
