Manchester United suffered their fourth Premier League home defeat of the season as Tottenham Hotspur were 2-1 winners at Old Trafford.

Spurs striker Emmanuel Adebayor gave the visitors a first-half lead before Christian Eriksen doubled their lead, with United forward Danny Welbeck halving Tottenham’s deficit with 23 minutes remaining.

Unsurprisingly there was a huge response on Twitter to United’s defeat, and here is a selection of our favourites posts from the professionals, past and present, in chronological order.

Red Devils legend Edwin van der Sar (‏@vdsar1970) can’t understand why Adebayor can’t produce his best on a more consistent basis: “How come that a player like Adebayor only turns up to perform when he wants and not at a consistent level?? #mantot”

Injured Spurs midfielder Sandro (‏@sandroraniere) hails his team-mates: “Yessssssssss veryyyy goodd… well done guys.. brilliant …”

Ex-United striker Michael Owen ‏(@themichaelowen) praises Spurs manager Tim Sherwood: “What a game. United weren’t bad, Spurs were outstanding. Tim Sherwood, take a bow. Great advertisement for young English managers.”

Norwich City defender Elliott Bennett ‏(@Ebenno88) loves the unpredictability of the Premier League: “What a win for Spurs at Old Trafford. This is why the @premierleague is the best in the World. Unpredictable and exciting week in week out.”

Former Spurs chairman Lord Sugar (‏@Lord_Sugar) enjoys reminding Tottenham fans of who was Sherwood’s No1 backer: “To Spurs fans who give me stick. Can you remind me who said Tim Sherwood should take the team with Les Ferdinand . I forgot.”

Tottenham legend Gary Lineker (‏@GaryLineker) is surprised that referee Howard Webb didn’t award a penalty after Hugo Lloris clashed with Welbeck: “When was Howard Webb sold by United? I must have missed that move in the transfer window.”

Spurs winger Andros Townsend ‏(@andros_townsend) is happy for two of his long-term team-mates: “What a massive win that was!! And the youngsters @hkane28 and @nabilbentaleb42 coming on at the end as well!! Can’t wait to get back fit!!”

Spurs forward Harry Kane ‏(@hkane28) shows his delight at the away win: “What a win that was ! Lads dug deep and put a shift in ! Great performance and great result away from home ! Buzzing ! #haveit #coys”

Finally, QPR defender Benoit Assou-Ekotto ‏(@AssouEkotto) sends out a special tweet for ex-Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas: “I luv my man Adebayor… He just show how AVB was wrong about him…Well done Spurs! happy for Tim too great perfect LOL!”
