Newcastle contact FA over Andy Carroll fitness concerns

Newcastle United have contacted the Football Association to express concerns over Andy Carroll’s fitness ahead of England’s friendly against France at Wembley on Wednesday.

The striker was unable to train on Monday due to a groin complaint and will face a late fitness test ahead of Wednesday’s clash after officials at St James’ Park aired their anxiety with the FA on Tuesday.

England manager Fabio Capello highlighted the qualities of the 21-year-old striker on Tuesday and urged him to make the most of his chance in the senior side.

Carroll has shined for Newcastle this season, scoring seven goals in 14 appearances, including his side’s winning strike against Arsenal.

“I saw Carroll play against Arsenal,” said Capello. “He played very well. He was good when he received the ball, his movement was excellent, he attacked the space well and was fantastic in the air. Technically he was good and he was very strong. I hope he shows the same qualities [against France].”

However, Capello warned the Newcastle forward he must improve his behaviour off the pitch in order for his performances to thrive on it and hopes Carroll’s first senior cap will mark a turning point in his fledgling career.

“It’s a big chance, to play with the seniors and to change his lifestyle,” said the England boss. “I hope that he will understand what really happens when you play with the seniors. Everyone makes mistakes when they are young.

“Carroll is really young. He is 21. We have to help him. A lot of people like a drink but he also has to understand now he is in the senior team there will be journalists, photographers and everyone else focusing on him. Life will be different for him now.

He added: “He has to change. His behaviour has to be better. He cannot make the mistakes he made before.”
