Andy Flower determined to get England ‘heading in right direction’

Andy Flower has spoken of his determination to ensure England get things heading in the right direction again after a disastrous Ashes whitewash.

The England team director has been heavily criticised after Alastair Cook’s men suffered an emphatic 5-0 loss to Australia despite beating the hosts 3-0 in the summer series.

But Flower, who took over as England chief in 2009, wants to put things right with the help of skipper Cook before facing Sri Lanka and No2 Test side India this summer.

“I’m very passionate about English cricket,” Flower told BBC Sport.

“[Captain] Alastair Cook and I are very determined to ensure we get things heading in the right direction again.”

Flower added: “This will be the start of something new. Out of adversity some good must come and a renewal of sorts will be good for English cricket.

“We’re not sure exactly what that renewal will look like right at this moment but we need wise people to make good decisions and get the right people on board, both on the playing staff and the support staff.”

Flower added that he is happy with Cook’s “angry” response to England’s humiliation Down Under this winter.

“Yes, and I’m glad Alastair is as well. I don’t feel proud of what has happened in this Test series.

“I am proud of my involvement over the last few years. It’s important that we review this logically and look at the mistakes we have made.”
