Andy Murray vowed to keep working to improve his ranking after the Scot moved up to No2 in the world with his triumph at the Miami Masters.

The British No1 battled back from a set down to beat David Ferrer in the final on Sunday and leapfrog Roger Federer into second place in the rankings behind Novak Djokovic.

Murray, who is still 3,620 points behind world No1 Djokovic, believes his step up the rankings reflects a new-found consistency in his game – and the 25-year-old is keen to to continue building on it this year.

“It’s nice to have been able to do it this week, so I don’t have to go into Monte Carlo or Madrid or Rome and be worrying or thinking about that,” said Murray.

“For me it doesn’t change a huge amount, but the fact that I’m moving up the rankings is a good sign.

“I have been winning a lot of matches. My consistency has been better over the last few months and the rankings obviously reflect that.

“So I will try and keep working hard during the clay and hopefully I can go higher.”

Murray admits he was made to work hard for his victory over world No4 Ferrer in Florida.

“It was a brutal, brutal match,” he added. “Both of us were on our last legs. It was good it wasn’t a best of five set match because I don’t know how the last few sets would have ended up.

“It was one of the toughest matches I have had to play in a Masters Series, for sure.”
